Burgers off the grill and crispy french fries are a great combo any time of the year. But no one wants to stand outside over a grill during the colder months.

And if you do have an indoor grill, you’d still need a deep fryer or air fryer to get the perfect fries. Kitchen appliances can add up quickly, both in terms of cost and precious counter space.

The PowerXL Air Fryer Grill is designed to handle various cooking functions. It can potentially replace several kitchen appliances, including the air fryer, deep fryer, toaster, and grill.

I found the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill to be a good option for grilling, but there might be better choices for other cooking functions.

Here are all the air fryers with grilling functions I’ve looked at in this article:

Keep reading this PowerXL Air Fryer review to see if it is right for you.

Product Overview: PowerXL Air Fryer Grill Reviews

You may have seen the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill on the TV commercial. This 8-in-1 kitchen appliance can grill, air fry, rotisserie, bake, broil, sear, toast, or reheat. You can also combo cook, using the air fryer and grilling features simultaneously. It landed on my list of the top air fryer grill combos.

PowerXL Air Fryer Grill 8 in 1 Roast, Bake, Rotisserie, Electric Indoor Grill (Black Deluxe)

There is also a stainless steel version and options with 2 additional accessories.

I found the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill good for certain tasks, but it has some design flaws that limit its capabilities. It still might fit your needs, depending on your intended use.

PowerXL Air Fryer Grill: Features & FAQs

To get a complete picture, I’ll break down some of the Power XL Deluxe Air Fryer’s features and answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

Rapid Air Technology

The Power XL Air Fryer has three heating elements, one on the top and bottom and one on the side. The powerful fan on the side is designed to circulate heat throughout the cooking chamber.

This cyclonic air is supposed to cook food 40% faster than a traditional oven. It also should air fry food with 70% fewer calories than deep-fried food.

The reality is that yes, it can cook faster, but it isn’t much different from any other toaster oven or air fryer.

On the other hand, it’s true that air frying results in fewer calories, yet, again, this is the same with other air fryers or ovens. Also, bear in mind that calories aren’t always bad.

Temperature Range

This air fryer should, in theory, reach a maximum temperature of 450°F (232°C), allowing you to sear steak or cook other foods requiring high heat.

A lot of customers had issues with the temperature decals rubbing off. Several users also said the fryer’s temperature was way off, and others said they had trouble reaching those higher temperatures.

One thing to also note is the exterior temperature. Some reviews complained about how hot the outside of the air fryer got on the countertop. Make sure to use caution when handling the PowerXL.

Size

PowerXL features a large capacity. It’s a family-sized air fryer and grill, holding 4-6 servings. The manufacturer claims you can cook up to a 10-pound (4.5 kg) rotisserie chicken or grill 6 large burgers and side dishes at one time.

Let’s take a look at this in action:

Most reviewers had success with chickens quite a bit smaller than 10 pounds. Others made several chicken wings and 4 burgers with fries in the crisper tray.

But the PowerXL Air Fryer Griller does have some limitations. For starters? It cannot fit a 12-inch (30.48 cm) pizza, a standard frozen pizza size. This was a major drawback for many users.

And while the advertisement shows three layers of food in the oven at the same time, many reviewers cautioned against cooking too much food at once. This diminishes the air fryer’s performance and increases the cooking time significantly.

Most people compared the size of the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill to a traditional toaster oven. Based on my research, this is a fairly accurate comparison.

How to use Power XL Air Fryer

Follow these simple steps on how to use the Power XL Fryer:

  1. Make sure the Air Fryer is turned off
  2. Remove the basket
  3. Load your food in the basket and put the basket back in the air fryer
  4. Turn on the Power XL Air Fryer
  5. Set the time and temperature. This will depend on your recipe, if relevant apply the instructions for a convection oven.
  6. Once finished remove the basket and then remove food carefully, perhaps using a utensil as it will be hot.

What cooking accessories come with the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill?

The PowerXL Air Fryer includes the following accessories: non-stick grill plate, rotisserie spit set, drip tray, stainless steel roasting rack, mesh fry basket, and baking pan.

All of these accessories are dishwasher-safe, making for easy cleanup. The PowerXL Air Fryer also includes a recipe book. Some owners wished more/better recipes were included in the recipe book, while others liked the recipes.

Do you get grill marks with the Power XL Air Fryer Grill?

The Power XL Air Fryer Grill comes with a nonstick grill plate that can be used for several foods, from steaks and hot dogs to grilled veggies and paninis.

Customers had success with the grill, getting clear grill marks on their foods. And the good news? Since the nonstick grill pan is dishwasher-safe, cleaning it is a snap.

Grilled Sandwich

Some users did have trouble with smoke when using the grilling feature. This is due to the high-fat content of those foods. The following section will give you some tips to help prevent this issue.

Is the PowerXL Air Fryer easy to clean?

This was one of customers’ biggest complaints regarding the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill. There were numerous reports of grease drips and spills on the countertop as well as in the cooking chamber.

Some said all the grease fell on the heating coils, causing the oven to smoke. Others report the air fryer filled their entire kitchen with smoke, setting off the smoke alarm. Chicken wings and other fatty foods were especially problematic.

The primary reason for this is that the drip tray actually goes under the heating element, so when grease drips during the cooking cycle, it lands on the heating elements and smokes.

One way to solve, or at least ease, this problem is to insert the baking tray above the bottom heating coil. This will prevent any grease from dripping onto the coil itself.

Of course, if you plan to use the rotisserie spit with a baking tray underneath, that means you have to limit the size of bird you cook. If you choose this option, I would stick with birds under 3 pounds (1.36 kg) or cornish hens.

For non-fatty foods, line the drip tray with aluminum foil to make cleanup easier. As noted, the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill comes with dishwasher-safe parts. But you can also wash the accessories with soap and warm water.

Be careful when cleaning the outside of the unit. Reviewers consistently complained of faded marks on the dials. Some said it was worse after cleaning the grill.

Is the PowerXL Air Fryer noisy?

The PowerXL Air Fryer Grill is noisy; several people complained about the noise. But it’s pretty typical for air fryers to make a lot of noise when cooking food.

How much power does the PowerXL Air Fryer use?

The PowerXL Air Fryer Grill has an energy rating of 1500 watts. Similar toaster oven and air fryer combos use 1800 watts.

That means this air fryer gill uses less energy than other models, but that also means this one will take longer to cook the same amount of food.

What to know before buying an air fryer grill

How does an air fryer grill work?

A typical air fryer has a heating element and a fan that circulates the hot air around the cooking chamber to brown and crisp food. It functions much like a convection oven.

An air fryer grill will usually have more heating elements to accommodate the different cooking functions. Which elements it uses will depend on the cooking function.

While a regular air fryer features a basket, an air fryer grill will more closely resemble a toaster oven, with a pull-down door. The door will also have a glass window so you can monitor the cooking process.

It will also include an oven rack and a baking tray instead of a single cooking basket.

Does an air fryer grill cut down on cooking time?

An air fryer grill sometimes does reduce cooking time, but not always. An air fryer grill will reheat frozen foods more quickly than a conventional oven because it doesn’t require as long to preheat the smaller cooking chamber.

However, when it comes to rotisserie chicken or other meats that need slower cooking, an air fryer grill really won’t save you much, if any, cooking time.

Can you air fry frozen food?

Yes. In fact, this is one of the most significant advantages of an air fryer. The ability to cook frozen food allows you to make easy prep meals faster than using the regular oven.

Many customers used the oven rack to cook small frozen pizzas or the crisper tray to cook frozen french fries.

What cooking functions should an air fryer have?

Obviously, air frying is the top priority. But there are a number of models that perform more than one cooking function. That depends on each person’s cooking needs and available kitchen space.

Some of the more common cooking functions of combination air fryers include rotisserie, baking, searing, toasting, and grilling.

The more functions the air fryer handles, the more versatile it is. That’s nice because it means you can save space and money with an “all in one” type of kitchen appliance. This makes cooking different meals an easier job.

The downside, however? Most combination air fryer grills won’t perform all cooking tasks equally well.  Generally speaking, when an appliance tries to do everything well, it fails in one or more categories.

What size air fryer grill should I buy?

The size of air fryer grills varies widely. Some air fryers are only designed to feed 1-2 people, whereas other air fryers are large enough to feed a family.

The type of food you plan to cook also plays a role in determining the right size air fryer grill.

Use the chart below to estimate how much food each size air fryer grill can cook at one time.

What are the alternatives?

Best Choice Products 10-in-1 Family Size Air Fryer

This Best Choice Products Air Fryer Oven is great for air frying, baking, rotisserie, dehydrating, roasting, and reheating. It’s a 10-in-1 appliance with a large capacity, able to hold up to 16.9 quarts (16 liters).

It comes with several accessories, including a baking pan, rotisserie forks and basket, and three crisper baskets. It also features an LCD touchscreen display. It’s taller than the Power XL Air Fryer, but it isn’t as wide.

This Best Choice Air Fryer performed very well with fried food, rotisserie, and dehydrated foods. It cooked food evenly and quickly. The rotisserie worked well, but it’s important not to have a bird that touches the bottom element.

This unit is similar in price to the PowerXL. This unit can perform as a grill, but it does not include a grill pan like the PowerXL.

However, when it comes to other cooking tasks? Customers seemed to be happier with the Best Choice Products Deluxe Air Fryer. They also didn’t have the same issues with splattering grease and hard-to-clean crevices that they had with the Power XL.

Emeril Everyday 360 Deluxe Air Fryer Oven

The Emeril Everyday Deluxe Air Fryer Oven is versatile. It has multiple cook settings, including air fry, bake, rotisserie, dehydrate, toast, reheat, roast, broil, bagel, pizza, slow cook, and reheat. It also comes with a recipe book.

This air fryer oven is similar to the Power XL Air Fryer Grill, but it does have a few key differences. First, this one is stainless steel, which looks attractive on the counter.

Second, this one includes more cooking accessories than the Power XL Air Fryer. Lastly, the Emeril one has a dehydrator option, whereas the Power XL does not.

This Emeril option is a good alternative, but it usually is more expensive than the Power XL. I don’t know that the performance justifies the cost difference, but that depends on the individual.

Final Thoughts: Power XL Air Fryer Grill Review

Do you have your heart set on grilling steaks and chicken, complete with grill markings? I’d go with the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill. It could well be the best air fryer grill combo on the market.

But if you want to primarily use it as an air fryer? I’d go with the Best Choice Products Deluxe Air Fryer Oven. It has a dehydrating feature, performs better overall than the PowerXL Air Fryer Grill, and is comparable in price.
