There are three types of toaster ovens that are safe to use under the cabinet:

Compact Toaster Oven

Compact toaster ovens, or low-height ovens, are much easier to find. They are smaller in size, saving precious counter space. The biggest consideration for compact ovens is how hot they get, as well as the clearance needed to safely operate the unit.

The necessary clearance varies from unit to unit. Additionally, manufacturers don’t always list that information, so you might have to do some trial and error.

The majority of the under-cabinet toaster ovens on my list fall into this category.

Cool-Touch Toaster Oven

Another option is to find a cool-touch toaster oven that doesn’t give off as much heat. Unfortunately, these tend to run bigger in size. This is typically due to their insulated, thick exteriors. But depending on how much counter space you have, this might be your best option.

What Size Under the Cabinet Toaster Oven Should I Get?

A counter toaster oven is only good if it, you know, fits under the kitchen cabinet. The standard height between countertops and upper cabinets is 18 inches (45.72 cm), but it is not uncommon to find cabinets 15 to 24 inches (38.1 cm to 60.96 cm) above the counter.

To best determine how tall your toaster oven should be, measure the distance between your counter and upper cabinets. I would add extra clearance to account for any emanating heat. The toaster ovens on my list range from approximately 8 to 15.5 inches.

The Ninja Food comes with several accessories, including sheet pans, wire racks, an air fry basket, a crumb tray, and a Foodi smart thermometer for safe cooking.

But don’t let all the programs scare you away. The digital controls are straightforward to use. Not only does the control panel light up, the optimal oven rack positions will light up based on the selected function.

So what did buyers think? They thought the Ninja Foodi was an amazing product. They had great results making everything from shrimp tempura and veggies to roasted chicken and, of course, toast.

Many people like the combination air fryer with an under cabinet toaster oven. They also liked how easy it was to use.

The biggest complaints? Some said it was noisy, and others found the unit difficult to clean.

The large interior can fit up to six slices of bread, a 12-inch pizza, casseroles, and up to a 4-pound chicken. The three rack positions make it easy to maximize space and cook more food at once.

The digital controls and LED display make this Toshiba easy to use. And the non-stick interior makes it easy to clean.

Customers were pleased with their toaster ovens. They liked the convection setting, the toast settings, and the easy-to-use control panel.

The biggest complaint was the drop-down crumb tray. Many customers said the crumbs routinely spilled out, due to the angle. Others said they had uneven results when making toast.

This counter toaster oven has 8 cooking functions: bake, broil, toast, bagel, frozen snacks, pizza, cookies, and potatoes. Buyers were able to make all sorts of dishes, including cake, lasagna, quiche, and garlic bread.

Black+Decker includes a drop-down crumb tray to make cleanup easy. It also comes with a baking pan and broil rack.

What did customers think? Overall, they had positive things to say about the Black+Decker under-cabinet toaster oven. It does save counter space, and the convection function is popular.

Users also liked the large inner capacity, and several mentioned how the crumb tray made this unit easy to keep clean. Some had a learning curve, but they enjoyed the configurable buttons that give the user maximum control over time and temperature.

This pretty compact toaster is one of the smallest on my list, making it ideal for a small kitchen. The good news? It will definitely save you kitchen counter space. The bad news? It doesn’t hold as much food, only fitting 2 slices of bread at a time.

The Balmuda Toaster Oven has five cooking modes, four of which are specifically designed for grains. The sandwich, artisan, pizza, and pastry settings all ensure perfectly crispy, flaky, or fluffy breads.

The oven setting can be used for cookies, frozen foods, gratin, meats, and veggies. It has three temperatures: 350°F (177°C), 400°F (204°), and 450°F (232°C).

The BALMUDA uses steam to preserve moisture while toasting bread. In fact, this model even includes a 5cc cup so you can pour the correct amount of water each time. It also comes with a baking pan and toasting rack.

Users affirmed that the BALMUDA shines with bread. From making grilled cheese and toast to reheating pizza, English muffins, bagels, and croissants, this steamer toaster delivers.

Unfortunately, reviewers didn’t have much to say about other foods. A few had success with frozen chicken and veggies. But the capacity is so small, you can’t efficiently prepare food for more than 1-2 people.

As for accessories, this oven comes with oven racks, a baking pan with a broiling rack insert, and a temperature probe.

This model is on the larger side, but it should have enough clearance to work easily as an under-cabinet toaster oven. Its roomy interior holds quarter sheet pans and most 9×13-inch casserole dishes.

Buyers loved this Wolf Gourmet appliance. They liked the warm function and the proofing function for rising breads. The LED display was easy to use, and users liked how quiet the unit is.

The max temperature for this under-counter toaster oven is 450°F (232°C). And it comes with a baking pan, broiling pan/baking rack, and a crumb tray.

This Oster has French doors for a sleek look, but a single pull will open both doors to make life easier. Plus, the built-in timer shuts off the unit after 90 minutes.

Reviewers did say to be careful with the doors, which get extremely hot and tend to shut unexpectedly. To avoid getting burned, I recommend making sure the doors are completely open, before reaching in.

Overall, buyers liked the performance of their Oster cabinet toaster ovens. They had great results with pizza, lasagna, pizza, bread, green beans, hash brown casseroles, and cookies.

Users especially liked that the light stays on anytime the unit is turned on. This feature helps monitor food and ensure the unit is off when done cooking.

The non-stick interior makes for easy cleaning, as well–users simply wiped clean their ovens with a damp cloth.

One popular feature among buyers is that the tray partially comes out when you open the door, allowing you to remove food more efficiently.

I’m not a big fan of the loud beep at the end of the cooking cycle. And several users noted that, unlike most toaster ovens, this one does not have a timer.

Instead, it has a dial for toast settings, bagel, broil, bake, pizza, and warm functions. It has a temperature dial ranging from 250°-450°F (120°-232°C). The bottom dial is for toast shade. You’ll have to use a separate timer for specific recipes.

There were a few isolated reports of shattering glass door. Fortunately, Cuisinart offers a limited warranty to cover those problems. The good news? This toaster oven is one of the most budget-friendly on the list.

If you want to save countertop space with an affordable, albeit basic, toaster oven, this Cuisinart appliance is a good pick.

Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Countertop Oven: Best Regular Toaster

This Hamilton Beach Toaster Oven is compact and will have room under the kitchen cabinet. It works more like a regular toaster oven than some of the other models and does not have a convection setting.

This appliance only has two settings: toast and oven (bake). It’s like the mullet of counter toaster ovens. Instead of “business in the front, party in the back,” this unit has a regular toaster on top, with a toaster oven underneath.

It does have two rack positions and enough space for a 9″ pizza or up to four slices of bread (in the bottom oven). The toaster slot is extra wide to accommodate bagels or artisan bread.

The temperature ranges from 250°F to 450°F (120°-232°C). The 60-minute auto shutoff allows you to “set it and forget it.” And the stay-on function is perfect for making multiple batches.

A word of caution, however: Multiple customers said their timing function quit working, leaving the toaster on indefinitely. This is a major fire hazard. This didn’t happen with everyone, but you might set a separate timer out of caution.

Also, several customers report the back bottom heating element didn’t turn orange like the others, making them believe it didn’t work. It’s designed it that way, though, so don’t let that deter you.
