Under Cabinet Toaster Oven Buying Guide

Best Under Cabinet Toaster Oven

What is a Toaster Oven?

A toaster oven is a compact electrical kitchen appliance that can warm, toast, or cook food.

While older models only had a few settings, modern toaster ovens frequently have 10+ preset cooking functions. They’re genuinely multi-purpose appliances.

How Does a Toaster Oven Work?

Toaster ovens typically have heating elements on the top and bottom of the cooking chamber. Depending on your chosen setting, one or both of these elements will heat up and cook food.

A convection toaster oven also has a fan that circulates the hot air around the food, cooking it faster and more evenly.

Why Choose a Toaster Oven?

Toaster ovens offer several advantages. First, they save space. If your kitchen is too small for a traditional oven, a toaster oven is the perfect solution. A toaster oven can potentially replace several appliances with one purchase, saving loads of space.

Secondly, toaster ovens are energy-efficient. They use less electricity than a large oven, and they won’t heat up the entire kitchen. And you know what that means–savings on your energy bill.

Thirdly, toaster ovens use dry heat to brown and crisp food, giving you better results than a microwave oven, which uses electromagnetic waves to heat food. If you’re searching for a microwave-toaster oven combo, I’ve listed the best models in another review.

Lastly, toaster ovens save time. They preheat much faster than traditional ovens, which allows you to get dinner to the table in less time.

What Sorts of Toaster Ovens Are Suitable for Under the Kitchen Cabinet?

There are three types of toaster ovens that are safe to use under the cabinet:

Mountable Toaster Oven

A mountable toaster oven can be secured under a kitchen cabinet to save countertop space. These models are few and far between. The most popular option used to be the Black and Decker Spacemaker Toaster Oven, but at the time of writing that doesn’t seem to be available.

An under-counter toaster oven is the best for saving space, but it’s a pain to install. On top of that, you must purchase toaster oven mounts if they’re not already included. Most people would rather skip the headache and choose another option.

Compact Toaster Oven

Compact toaster ovens, or low-height ovens, are much easier to find. They are smaller in size, saving precious counter space. The biggest consideration for compact ovens is how hot they get, as well as the clearance needed to safely operate the unit.

The necessary clearance varies from unit to unit. Additionally, manufacturers don’t always list that information, so you might have to do some trial and error.

The majority of the under-cabinet toaster ovens on my list fall into this category.

Cool-Touch Toaster Oven

Another option is to find a cool-touch toaster oven that doesn’t give off as much heat. Unfortunately, these tend to run bigger in size. This is typically due to their insulated, thick exteriors. But depending on how much counter space you have, this might be your best option.

What Size Under the Cabinet Toaster Oven Should I Get?

A counter toaster oven is only good if it, you know, fits under the kitchen cabinet. The standard height between countertops and upper cabinets is 18 inches (45.72 cm), but it is not uncommon to find cabinets 15 to 24 inches (38.1 cm to 60.96 cm) above the counter.

To best determine how tall your toaster oven should be, measure the distance between your counter and upper cabinets. I would add extra clearance to account for any emanating heat. The toaster ovens on my list range from approximately 8 to 15.5 inches.

Many people like the combination air fryer with an under cabinet toaster oven. They also liked how easy it was to use.

The biggest complaints? Some said it was noisy, and others found the unit difficult to clean.

Customers were pleased with their toaster ovens. They liked the convection setting, the toast settings, and the easy-to-use control panel.

The biggest complaint was the drop-down crumb tray. Many customers said the crumbs routinely spilled out, due to the angle. Others said they had uneven results when making toast.

Overall, though, this Toshiba has a lot of functionality and allows users to save counter space.

Pros

  • 10 cooking functions
  • Intuitive control panel
  • Rotisserie capable
  • Roomy interior

Cons

  • Awkward crumb/drip tray
  • Complaints of uneven toasting

Dimensions (LxWxH): 22.8 x 13.4 x 15.5 inches (58 x 34 x 39 cm)

The Black+Decker Countertop Convection Toaster Oven combines heating elements and a high-powered fan to cook food faster and more evenly.

This counter toaster oven has 8 cooking functions: bake, broil, toast, bagel, frozen snacks, pizza, cookies, and potatoes. Buyers were able to make all sorts of dishes, including cake, lasagna, quiche, and garlic bread.

Black+Decker includes a drop-down crumb tray to make cleanup easy. It also comes with a baking pan and broil rack.

BLACK+DECKER Countertop Convection Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel

What did customers think? Overall, they had positive things to say about the Black+Decker under-cabinet toaster oven. It does save counter space, and the convection function is popular.

Users also liked the large inner capacity, and several mentioned how the crumb tray made this unit easy to keep clean. Some had a learning curve, but they enjoyed the configurable buttons that give the user maximum control over time and temperature.

So what don’t I like? Several reviewers complained about how hot this unit gets. Make sure you leave plenty of clearance and never set things on top of the oven.

They also said the words on the outside wore off, and the display is not backlit. It does have a light above the display, but many users said it was still difficult to read at night. There’s also no internal light.

There were a few reports of the glass door shattering, but these seemed to be isolated events.

Overall, people found this Black+Decker to have solid value. It’s a great bargain compact toaster oven.

BALMUDA the Toaster Oven: Best for Breads

Dimensions (LxWxH): 14.1 x 12.6 x 8.2 inches (35.8 x 32 x 20.8 cm)

If you thought it was impossible for a counter toaster oven to have a sleek design, think again. This BALMUDA toaster has a modern look and comes in four color choices: white, black, taupe, and gray.

This pretty compact toaster is one of the smallest on my list, making it ideal for a small kitchen. The good news? It will definitely save you kitchen counter space. The bad news? It doesn’t hold as much food, only fitting 2 slices of bread at a time.

BALMUDA The Toaster | Steam Oven Toaster | 5 Cooking Modes - Sandwich Bread, Artisan Bread, Pizza, Pastry, Oven | Compact Design | Baking Pan | K01M-KG | Black | US Version

The Balmuda Toaster Oven has five cooking modes, four of which are specifically designed for grains. The sandwich, artisan, pizza, and pastry settings all ensure perfectly crispy, flaky, or fluffy breads.

The oven setting can be used for cookies, frozen foods, gratin, meats, and veggies. It has three temperatures: 350°F (177°C), 400°F (204°), and 450°F (232°C).

The BALMUDA uses steam to preserve moisture while toasting bread. In fact, this model even includes a 5cc cup so you can pour the correct amount of water each time. It also comes with a baking pan and toasting rack.

Users affirmed that the BALMUDA shines with bread. From making grilled cheese and toast to reheating pizza, English muffins, bagels, and croissants, this steamer toaster delivers.

Unfortunately, reviewers didn’t have much to say about other foods. A few had success with frozen chicken and veggies. But the capacity is so small, you can’t efficiently prepare food for more than 1-2 people.

This left several customers questioning whether the BALMUDA is worth the heftier price tag. Still, others raved about their units.

If bread is a regular for you? This BALMUDA is practically unbeatable. Just be prepared to spend some dough (pun intended).

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Great for breads
  • Compact size
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Small interior
  • Limited functions
  • Expensive

Wolf Gourmet Elite Digital Countertop Convection Toaster Oven: Best Splurge

Dimensions (LxWxH): 16.7 x 22.4 x 12.5 inches (42.4 x 56.9 x 31.75 cm)

Wolf Gourmet is a line from Wolf, a company known for high-end kitchen appliances. This line includes cookware, cutlery, and countertop appliances like this Elite Digital Countertop Toaster Oven.

It has 7 cooking modes to give you the most versatility: bake, roast, broil, warm, bread proof, bagel, and toast. When using the convection setting, the Wolf Gourmet toaster oven circulates hot air to evenly cook food.

As for accessories, this oven comes with oven racks, a baking pan with a broiling rack insert, and a temperature probe.

Wolf Gourmet Elite Digital Countertop Convection Toaster Oven with Temperature Probe, Stainless Steel and Red Knobs (WGCO150S)

This model is on the larger side, but it should have enough clearance to work easily as an under-cabinet toaster oven. Its roomy interior holds quarter sheet pans and most 9×13-inch casserole dishes.

Buyers loved this Wolf Gourmet appliance. They liked the warm function and the proofing function for rising breads. The LED display was easy to use, and users liked how quiet the unit is.

Several said it gave them the functionality of a full-blown oven while saving time and kitchen space.

Oddly enough, one of the biggest letdowns was the toast setting. Several users felt like this oven took too long to toast, and others said the toast didn’t get dark enough.

Be prepared to spend significantly more for this option than others on the list. This is an excellent pick if you’re looking to splurge and want something top-of-the-line. If you just want this to make toast? I’d go with something else.

Pros

  • Versatile, 7 cooking modes
  • Keep warm function
  • Large interior
  • LED display, digital controls
  • Interchangeable knobs

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Not best to toast bread

Oster Convection Oven, 8-in-1 Countertop Toaster Oven: Best Large Capacity

Dimensions (LxWxH): 20.2 x 23.8 x 15.1 inches (51.2 x 60.5 x 38.4 cm)

This Oster Convection Oven is the second largest under-counter toaster oven on the list, coming in behind the Black+Decker. It has enough space to fit two 16″ pizzas, a family-sized bird, casserole, or up to 14 slices of bread.

The max temperature for this under-counter toaster oven is 450°F (232°C). And it comes with a baking pan, broiling pan/baking rack, and a crumb tray.

This Oster has French doors for a sleek look, but a single pull will open both doors to make life easier. Plus, the built-in timer shuts off the unit after 90 minutes.

Reviewers did say to be careful with the doors, which get extremely hot and tend to shut unexpectedly. To avoid getting burned, I recommend making sure the doors are completely open, before reaching in.

Oster Convection Oven, 8-in-1 Countertop Toaster Oven, XL Fits 2 16" Pizzas, Stainless Steel French Door

Overall, buyers liked the performance of their Oster cabinet toaster ovens. They had great results with pizza, lasagna, pizza, bread, green beans, hash brown casseroles, and cookies.

Users especially liked that the light stays on anytime the unit is turned on. This feature helps monitor food and ensure the unit is off when done cooking.

Several people did caution that the exterior gets overheated, so give this model plenty of clearance. They also said the control panel was not very responsive to touch, so you’ll have to press down firmly.

Overall, reviewers felt like the appliance was a good value. It’s a solid mid-range option with plenty of room.

Pros

  • Extra-large capacity
  • Oven light stays on
  • Good value

Cons

  • Learning curve
  • Cooks a little slowly
  • Exterior gets very hot

Cuisinart TOB-1010 Toaster Oven: Best for Easy Cleaning

Dimensions (LxWxH): 15.8 x 9 x 11.9 inches (40 x 22.9 x 30.2 cm)

This Cuisinart Toaster Oven is one of the smaller units on my list, but it still has room for an 11-inch pizza or 6 slices of bread. It comes with a baking pan, a wire rack, and a crumb tray.

This toaster oven has a sleek stainless steel front with a cool-grip handle.

The non-stick interior makes for easy cleaning, as well–users simply wiped clean their ovens with a damp cloth.

One popular feature among buyers is that the tray partially comes out when you open the door, allowing you to remove food more efficiently.

Cuisinart TOB-1010 Toaster Oven Broiler, 11.875" x 15.75" x 9", Stainless Steel

I’m not a big fan of the loud beep at the end of the cooking cycle. And several users noted that, unlike most toaster ovens, this one does not have a timer.

Instead, it has a dial for toast settings, bagel, broil, bake, pizza, and warm functions. It has a temperature dial ranging from 250°-450°F (120°-232°C). The bottom dial is for toast shade. You’ll have to use a separate timer for specific recipes.

There were a few isolated reports of shattering glass door. Fortunately, Cuisinart offers a limited warranty to cover those problems. The good news? This toaster oven is one of the most budget-friendly on the list.

If you want to save countertop space with an affordable, albeit basic, toaster oven, this Cuisinart appliance is a good pick.

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy to use
  • Cool-touch handle
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Loud beep
  • No timer
  • Reports of shattering glass

Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Countertop Oven: Best Regular Toaster

Dimensions (LxWxH): 17.8 x 10.2 x 12.05 inches (45.2 x 26 x 30.6 cm)

This Hamilton Beach Toaster Oven is compact and will have room under the kitchen cabinet. It works more like a regular toaster oven than some of the other models and does not have a convection setting.

This appliance only has two settings: toast and oven (bake). It’s like the mullet of counter toaster ovens. Instead of “business in the front, party in the back,” this unit has a regular toaster on top, with a toaster oven underneath.

It does have two rack positions and enough space for a 9″ pizza or up to four slices of bread (in the bottom oven). The toaster slot is extra wide to accommodate bagels or artisan bread.

Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Countertop Toaster Oven and Long Slot 2 Slice Toaster, 60 Minute Timer and Automatic Shut Off, Shade Selector, Stainless Steel (31156)

The temperature ranges from 250°F to 450°F (120°-232°C). The 60-minute auto shutoff allows you to “set it and forget it.” And the stay-on function is perfect for making multiple batches.

A word of caution, however: Multiple customers said their timing function quit working, leaving the toaster on indefinitely. This is a major fire hazard. This didn’t happen with everyone, but you might set a separate timer out of caution.

Also, several customers report the back bottom heating element didn’t turn orange like the others, making them believe it didn’t work. It’s designed it that way, though, so don’t let that deter you.

Many customers had a good experience with the toaster oven. They made bagels, garlic bread, toast, English muffins, and even steak. They liked the ease of use and ease of cleaning.

This is an affordable, regular toaster oven that will save space in the kitchen. It does appear to have some quality-control issues, however.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • 2-in-1 toaster oven combo
  • Auto shutoff and 60-minute timer
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Only 2 settings: toast & bake
  • Reports of malfunctioning timer, fire hazard

Best Under-Cabinet Toaster Oven: My Recommendation

If you want the best bang for your buck? I’d go with the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Toaster Oven. It’s multi-purpose but easy to use. It saves space but still has room for most foods. Most importantly, the performance is excellent.
