It’s super convenient to go from stove to oven, what’s more you can even save on pans. Who needs a casserole dish if you can use your skillet in the oven? Yet not all cookware is meant for the oven. You even need to be careful with cookware that claims to be oven safe–sometimes there is a temperature limit.

That’s why I’m here; to help you find the best oven safe cookware for your kitchen. Time to see which cookware sets can literally take the heat!

How to Choose the Best Oven Safe Cookware

I like to look at:

  • The number of pieces included in the set,
  • What material the cookware is made from,
  • Quality & affordability,
  • Non-stick coatings,
  • Stove-type compatibility, and
  • Washing instructions.

For oven safe cookware in particular, realistically it needs to withstand at temperatures of at least 200°C (400°F). Even higher is better.

What’s it made of?

It’s crucial that ALL components of your cookware set are oven safe; this includes handles and perhaps lids.

Lids are often oven safe to a lower temperature. This might be OK if you are warming something up, but if you plan on cooking in the oven with lids it could be a problem.

Smoke pouring from oven

Materials like plastic, wood and rubber rarely belong in the oven. Placing non oven safe materials in the oven is unwise. It’s likely to damage the cookware and the oven. It will also risk releasing and leaching all sorts of toxic, unhealthy fumes. The last thing you want to deal with is a potential fire hazard!

The best stove to oven cookware is often made of materials like cast iron, or stainless steel, but there are other options.

Oven Safe Temperatures

Different cookware is indicated to withstand varying heat temperatures. You need to base your decision depending on your own individual cooking requirements.

A hot oven being opened.

What temperature do you normally cook food at? I usually cook at 200°C (400°F) to 220°C (430°F). So 230°C (450°F) should be plenty. A higher oven safe temperature is better – it reduces the chance of warping, damage or melting.

While the pot or pan itself might be ovenproof to high temperatures, the limitation often comes from the handle. These are often made of plastic or a material that literally can’t “handle” the heat. This is one reason cast iron, with solid integrated iron handles, can make a great choice of oven safe pan.

Another temperature limitation culprit is the non-stick coating. For example, Teflon is not recommended for usage above 260°C (500°F).

Don’t forget the lids! Lids are normally oven safe to a lower temperature than the pan. If lids or handles are made of glass, this can be problematic. Your worst nightmare would be for them to shatter all over your food!

The highest risk with glass is actually when it is just sitting there cooling down. Even when only cooled by the air, if it has been heat to a high temperature, when it cools it can shatter.

That’s why it’s worth reading all this guide carefully. I give you the information you need to decide what cookware to buy. But in the end, it depends how, and at what temperature, you will use your oven safe cookware.

Freezer Safe

As an aside, you’ll find that some cookware is freezer safe. Be careful here. It isn’t the best idea to use cookware for food storage as certain metals or chemicals may leach into your food. If you must store cold food in cookware, make sure the cookware is safe and non-toxic, as well as freezer safe.

It, hopefully, goes without saying that it’s a bad idea to transition glass lids from freezer to oven or vice versa!

What’s the Lowdown on Non-Stick Coatings?

There’s been a lot of controversy about whether non-stick coatings are safe for your health and the environment. In my view, Teflon and other similar coatings are OK, but not the safest thing in the world. If you can find a suitable alternative, it is better to use that. But often non-stick Teflon is the easiest solution!

Teflon contains PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is the chemical used to create non-stick coatings. Unless a non-stick product is advertised as PTFE-free, it probably contains PTFE.

Unfortunately a lot of cookware that appears to be “healthy” like granite or ceramic, often has a PTFE coating.

In short; if it’s nonstick and doesn’t say “PTFE-free” it’s likely, basically Teflon

An oven safe skillet being used as a baking dish

Epicurious Aluminum Non-stick Cookware Set

This 11 piece set includes a universal stainless-steel steamer insert.

This is a nice set and is technically oven safe. Unfortunately since it can only take up to 177°C (350°F), it won’t be enough for most uses.

This is an affordable, durable, anodized cookware set which heats food efficiently. All the pans are constructed from heavy-gauge aluminum. The stainless steel base makes this cookware set induction compatible.

In addition, its unique belly shape purports to provide enhanced heat and moisture circulation.

The manufacturer claims all the pieces are safe for use with metal utensils. I would always take special care with this though. I’ve never heard of any nonstick being completely scratchproof!

The Eclipse non-stick coating works well, and is Teflon free!

Lids & handles: The tempered glass lids allow you to watch your cooking. The silicone handles stay cool to the touch and are double riveted for extra strength.

This is a nice set, but it’s maximum oven safe temperature of 177°C (350°F) lets it down. This is only suitable for warming something in the oven, not for most oven cooking

Pros:

  • Compatible with all stove types – induction, ceramic glass, gas and electric ranges
  • PTFE (Teflon) Free Non-Stick interior
  • Cool touch handles
  • Dishwasher Safe
  • Metal Utensil Safe
  • Attractively presented
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Only oven safe up to 177°C (350°F)
  • Some users report warping, peeling and scratching

T-fal E918SE Ultimate Hard Anodized Cookware Set

This 14 Piece set includes a Dutch oven with lid, and steamer insert with 2 side handles. This set topped my list for the best cookware for electric stoves.

Temperature limits: Pieces can take temperatures of 204°C (400°F), but lids only go up to 177°C (350°F).

With a strong titanium core, this impressive set functions as a heavy-duty workhorse in the kitchen. It is definitely up there in the high-performance, durable stakes for best non stick oven cookware.

The non-stick protective layer is scratch and corrosion resistant, plus it won’t react with acidic foods. Also, the non-stick interior stands up to daily use. Cooking outcomes are better overall, and washing up becomes a breeze.

T-fal Ultimate Hard Anodized Nonstick Cookware Set 14 Piece Oven Safe 400F, Lid Safe 350F Pots and Pans, Dishwasher Safe Black

T-fal’s Heat Mastery System claims three main points for successful results every time:

  • Long-lasting and superior non-stick coating,
  • Anti-warping even heat base, and
  • Patented Thermo-Spot technology.

The Thermo-Spot indicator on their units is an ingenious system. The ring around the spot turns a solid red when the pans are adequately preheated. I have to say, clever as it is though, I’ve never needed to use it when cooking with T-fal!

Lids & handles: Riveted silicone handles and vented lids. The handles are designed for safety and comfort. The vented tempered glass lids maintain visibility, while retaining heat and moisture.

Pros:

  • Durable and strong
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Easy to use
  • Excellent nonstick surface

Cons:

  • Not suitable for induction stoves
  • Does contain Teflon
  • Some reports that pans did not sit flat on glass top stove
  • Some reports of discoloration and scratches over time

Rachael Ray 87375 Brights Hard-Anodized Aluminum Non-stick Cookware Set

You would think renowned celebrity cook Rachael Ray would know a thing or two about designing a kitchen set, right? In fact, this budget set flaunts both aesthetic value and practical performance.

You get 10 pieces in this colorful set. I like how it’s the handles that have color as they are the least likely to get scratched or fade. Unfortunately, perhaps because of these handles, the maximum oven safety of the set is 177°C (350°F).

She claims her pots and pans are a healthier option, due to their premium and durable non-stick system.

The hard-anodized construction heats swiftly and thoroughly. The design means there should be no irritating hotspots causing your food to burn.

WearEver C944SA Pure Living Non-stick Ceramic Oven Safe Cookware Set

This 10 piece set includes a covered Dutch oven and 2 nylon tools.

The best attribute about this set is its very high temperature resistance of 400°C (750°F). This is amazing for non stick and beyond what you are likely to need.

WearEver markets their set as being the best oven safe ceramic cookware. They claim it delivers high performance and perfectly executed cooking results. They further claim that it features superior stain and scratch resistance. Its high quality aluminum base should help efficiently produce thoroughly cooked dishes.

There are reports of the non stick property wearing off after a while, or even staining. This isn’t something I’ve noticed.

  • Set withstands very high temperatures
  • Affordable price range
  • PTFE-free (i.e. Teflon free)
  • Dishwasher safe

Cast iron is able to withstand very high temperatures in the oven. This strong and sturdy cast iron pan set is no exception. The iron, while slow to heat up, cooks efficiently and evenly.

Cast Iron works on virtually any surface, including grills, stoves and induction cooktops. (Be aware that cast iron can scratch a glass or ceramic surface though – it’s not ideal for smooth top stoves)

There’s no denying their superior craftsmanship, quality and long-lasting reliability. Each all-purpose skillet is crafted with seasoned cast iron that can take years, or even lifetimes, of regular cooking and washing.

I love that this skillet set comes with silicone heat handle holders as well. It’s a very clever addition to add non-slip, heat-resistant handle covers to protect your hands while cooking or serving food. Just remember to take the handle covers off before you place the pans into the oven.

Cast iron isn’t for everyone. Are you prepared to do the extra work? It starts right away! These pans are lightly pre seasoned but you should season them before use.

If you are prepared to take care of them, cast iron is ideal for the oven. There’s no practical limit on the temperature it can take in a home oven.

  • Safe at all home oven temperatures
  • Incredible value
  • Includes handy handle holders
  • Long lasting and high quality

Cons:

Lodge Cast Iron Skillet

Set includes: Skillet of diameter 10.25 inches (26.04 cm), plus red silicone hot handle holder.

Best Oven Cookware Set

If being oven safe was the priority for me, and I wanted a full cookware set then I would probably go with the WearEver C944SA Pure Living Cookware Set. It’s a good price, it’s nonstick and most importantly it’s oven safe to 400°C (750°F). This is well beyond anything you’re likely to need in a home oven.

It’s true that the lids are only oven safe to 177°C (350°F). That’s not great. But glass lids are very convenient, and it’s hard to get glass that can withstand very high temperatures.

This set is easy to use, especially if you want something you’ll be popping in the oven all the time. For me it’s the best all round oven safe cookware.

Best Cookware set for Occasional Oven Use

The T-fal E918SE Ultimate Cookware Set is a fantastic set. Convenient, easy to use and durable.

Now, 204°C (400°F) is OK as a temperature limit in a fan assisted oven. It’s a little low, but if I was only putting it in the oven occasionally then I’d just be careful.

If you like T-Fal cookware, but want to some more options, check out my T-Fal ceramic cookware review. It’s oven-safe too, but unfortunately to only 175°C (350 °F).

Best Oven Safe Skillet

Cast Iron is the ultimate cookware. There isn’t a stove, campfire or oven that you can’t use it in. As long as it is solid cast iron there are not realistic temperature limits. That’s why if I wanted just one oven safe pan, I would get the Lodge Cast Iron Skillet.

This is a pan that will last generations. It’s easy to use, versatile and durable. It’s the single best oven skillet I could find.

Yes cast iron is a bit more work – but if you are only getting one pan – is it a that much of a big deal?

If you are looking for a full cookware set and like the look of cast iron, then consider checking out my cast iron cookware set guide.

Alternatives

The advantage of oven-safe cookware are:

  • It saves space
  • It lets you transfer a dish from stove to oven

However, if you have space in your kitchen and are focusing on baking, not stove to oven dishes, then consider a dedicated bakeware set. These are more suitable for things like loaves, cakes and muffins. If you are interested, check out my baking pan set roundup.
